DEFINITIONS
*BISHOP is derived from the Greek word Epískopos (ἐπίσκοπος), meaning "Overseer"; this episcopal role is first found in the New Testament (ie. 1 Timothy 3:1-7) and over time developed into the first of three ministerial orders in The Church, namely: Bishop, Presbyter & Deacon. The role of Bishop was initially indistinguishable from that of the Presbyter in Scripture; however, with the growth of the Christian Faith, this role evolved into a deeper position of oversight. Bishops are especially responsible for the formation, ordination and spiritual covering of Presbyters, Deacons and even other Bishops. They also are tasked with providing oversight and being the chief pastor for groups of churches/parishes (ie Diocese) and often regions. The Bishop is to be a defender of the Christian Faith, standing guard against heresy. Wherever the Bishop’s Cathedra (chair/seat of authority) is located, it is considered as a “Cathedral.” Since our Bishop’s Cathedra is currently located at our ServeCity East Parish, it is our Cathedral.
**PRESBYTER is derived from the Greek word Presbuteros (πρεσβυτερος) historically translated as “Elder” and “Priest.” The presbyteral role is found throughout the New Testament (ie. Acts 20:17-31; 1 Timothy 4:14; James 5:14, 15) and over time developed into the second of three ministerial orders in The Church, namely: Bishop, Presbyter & Deacon. Those who are a part of the ServeCity Presbytery are commissioned to provide pastoral care, spiritual protection for the parish, preside over the ministry of The Word & Sacraments, also leading in various other capacities based on their spiritual gifting and talents.
***DEACON is derived from the Greek word Diákonos (διάκονος), meaning servant / one who serves / minister. The diaconal role was implemented in the New Testament, as an assisting position to the Presbytery (Acts 6:1-7) and over time has developed into the third of three ministerial orders in The Church, namely: Bishop, Presbyter & Deacon. Those who are a part of the ServeCity Diaconate, are commissioned to provide assistance in the ministry of The Word & Sacrament, serving also in various other capacities, based on their spiritual gifting and talents. Deacons titled “Minister” are a part of our diaconal order of preachers / teachers. “Transitional Deacons” are those being formed and prepared to enter the Presbytery.
